What are the top 10 problems teens and tweens are facing today?

In advance of our Teens and Tweens seminar, I have looked into what the key issues are today, from the perspective of Teens and Tweens themselves…

9 years ago, in response to a Yahoo “adolescent” thread

What are the top 10 problems or worries that Teens face Today???

 If you are a teen, what are some things you are worried about or have problems with?? Things like, family, faith, high school, love, cutting, drinking, drugs, porn etc. etc. I’m just wondering, so if you could give me an idea, that would be great!!! =]

In response to the above question, Ms. Rather Unique said:

  1. Pregnancy
  2. Peer Pressure
  3. Drugs
  4. Alcohol
  5. School
  6. Family Problems
  7. Body Image
  8. Virginity
  9. Gossip
  10. Violence

The above yahoo thread is from 2009.

 Recent issues: anxiety about global issues, and Terrorism

More recent articles have indicated young people are becoming increasingly worried about wider global issues, such as the refugee crises, the EU referendum and US politics.

Most recent perhaps are the shocking, tragic and frightening terror attacks at Westminster, in Manchester at the Ariana Grande concert, and on 3 June 2017, at London Bridge. On our Guest Blog, Sue Atkins, parenting expert, has recently provided “Tips for talking and teaching children about terrorism.”

What does this tell us?

Some of the issues facing young people have been around for a long time, but there does appear to be more and more, and life doesn’t seem to be becoming easier nor simpler.

The positives you can take?

We are certainly less nervous in talking openly about difficult issues such as self-harm, mental health, child suicide, social media, grooming, body image, eating disorders, terrorism and radicalisation to name a few. Parents, rightly so, want to be informed.

 We are holding a seminar on 14 June 2017: supporting teens and tweens

We have a fantastic panel of distinguished experts:

Dr Lisa Barkley – Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with children and families. Currently Principal Clinical Psychologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital;

Sue Atkins – Parenting expert, best-selling author, broadcaster and speaker;

Sharn Tomlinson – CEO of local charity Mind in Mid Herts; and

Patricia Seabright – Founder of the National Teen Trust.

Come and ask questions of those ‘in the know’ and see what the experts have to say; hear their practical tips and advice on keeping informed and providing support.
