Family Safety Week 2019

being a single parent and co parenting during lockdown

This week is Family Safety Week. The week-long campaign was initially started by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. This year there is a specific emphasis on pedestrian safety, however in the past there has been a more general emphasis on keeping the most vulnerable members of the family, particularly children, safe.

Whilst Family Safety Week focuses on protecting children from physical harm, it should not be forgotten that children are also at risk of psychological and emotional harm. This is something which should be considered if you have made the decision to separate or divorce.

Not only can the breakdown of a relationship be difficult for the parties involved, it can have an impact on the children. Here are a few tips to make the process easier where there are children involved:

  • Avoid exposing your children to any arguments and do not force them to take sides.
  • Avoid talking to your children about the separation or divorce. If you need to confide in someone, consider speaking to a friend, relative or therapist.
  • Once you have made the decision to separate or divorce, sit down together and inform the children of this.  You should give them the opportunity to ask questions and encourage them to be honest about the way they feel. If the children do not feel like expressing themselves through talking, suggest that they write it down.
  • If your partner or spouse has moved out of the family home, encourage the children to have regular contact with them so far as possible. Where weekday contact is not possible, encourage the children to have FaceTime or telephone contact.
  • Reassure your children.

At Rayden Solicitors, our aim is to make the separation or divorce process easier for you and your family. If you would like to make an appointment or have any questions about family matters, please contact us.
