Mediation Awareness Week (MAW) commences on 5 October 2019 and is spearheaded by the Mediation Awareness Group. The aim of MAW is to provide guidance on how mediation can be used to effectively resolve disputes and conflicts and to demonstrate how mediation can often provide a quicker, cheaper and more effective alternative to litigation.
Mediation can be an extremely effective way of resolving family disputes. Family mediators are trained to help separating (or separated) couples to reach an agreement on important issues such as the arrangements for the children or how finances should be divided
Usually a family mediator will meet with both parties together. They are neutral, do not take sides and try to facilitate discussions between parties in a compassionate and supportive way.
At Rayden Solicitors we consider that there are many benefits to family mediation including:
- The parties remain in control
The mediator’s role is to facilitate discussions between the parties which mean they remain in control of the decision making process.
- Preserves relationships
Mediation is generally less acrimonious than litigation and can be instrumental in preserving ongoing relationships and open channels of communication. This can be particularly important where parties will need to continue co-parenting with each other for a number of years.
- Reduces cost
Mediation can often be a much more cost effective way to resolve disputes.
